What are options to sterilize N95/FFP masks so I can reuse them?

N95 respirators (aka N95 masks) are a product that is used to protect the wearer from breathing in viral particles in the air.

They are highly effect live-saving products and are critical in the COVID crisis. Under normal circumstances, they are used for a few hours or in one patient interaction and discarded. In the COVID crisis, there is a major shortage. One popular idea to increase the availability of N95 masks is to sterilize and reuse them. Reuse after sterilization requires that the physical structure of the mask not be damaged, that the filter efficiency not be significantly reduced, that the elastic bands which hold the mask to the face be functional, and that harmful chemical residues do not remain on the mask that could be inhaled by the wearer.

Some methods that can be used for decontamination include dry or moist heat, a specific type of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, or hydrogen peroxide vaporization. Many ideas have appeared online of various degrees of reliability, usefulness, and practicality. Our team is looking at those online resources and has found a few that we feel are the most reliable and practical. Other online resources we found are also listed below.
